Medical Acupuncture

What is Medical Acupuncture?

Medical acupuncture is the term used to describe acupuncture performed by a doctor trained and licensed in Western medicine who has also had thorough training in acupuncture as a specialty practice. Such a doctor can use one or the other approach, or a combination of both as the need arises, to treat an illness.

Dr. Khan offers a variety of acupuncture treatments for a variety of pain syndromes. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please contact us.

Your first acupuncture treatment:

Acupuncture is an eastern healing art which is used as primary or an adjunct treatment in many conditions.Generally acupuncture treatments are a relaxing experience.

Your first visit:

Your first visit will be longer than the follow-up visits and entails history and physical examination. The initial questioning is very important in formulating a treatment plan for your pain condition. Dr. Khan will also feel for your pulse and do a basic tongue examination which helps in making the diagnosis.Your treatment plan will be individualized based on these findings. The individualized treatment plan is a plus point of Eastern medicine.

Dr. Khan is a medical doctor as well and will provide you a plan based on Eastern and Western medicine for your pain condition. This may include lifestyle modification, referral to physical therapy, trial of Western medications in addition to acupuncture treatment.

The initial treatment will be conservative to ensure that you are comfortable with acupuncture treatment and allows her to see your response to acupuncture treatment. The initial treatment may use  5-10 acupuncture points.

Acupuncture needles:

Acupuncture needles are sterile and single use needle. The needles are extremely thin and you will be surprised to see how thin they are!

What will you feel:

The sensation of needle insertion is minimal. Some patients may not feel it at all. Sometimes we do rotate the needles till you feel a heavy sensation.

How long will the treatment last?

After the insertion of needles, the treatment lasts for 15-25 minutes. You are left to rest during this time period. A typical acupuncture appointment is 45 minutes long.

Other treatments that may be used:

Electroacupuncture: Acupuncture needles are stimulated with a tiny electric charge from a machine.

Cupping: Cupping involves the application of small plastic cups with suction applied to you. This will assist in removing the toxins and muscle tension from your body. This is a very effective way to manage your pain.

What is the duration of the treatment plan?

If your pain condition is recent, you may need only 2-4 visits for your condition to improve. If your pain condition has been chronic( more than 3 months old) you will need at least 8-12 treatments to derive long lasting benefit.

How should one dress for the appointment?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing.

What to expect at the end of an acupuncture visit:

Some patients feel immediate pain relief at the end of an appointment. On the other hand, some patients feel more sore right after the appointment, especially at the locations of needle placement. We recommend using a heating pad or icing after you receive acupuncture treatments. Dr. Khan will also give your instructions to take over the counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen to help with soreness. This recommendation will vary from patient to patient based on their individual condition.
